Cool Visualization Technique

Today, the New York Times business section had a visualization of movie box office revenue. I thought it was cool enough in the paper, but the online version has popups that show the details and it goes all the way back to 1986. I imagine there could be many uses for this type of chart in supply chain dashboards, for example inventory levels by product over time.
